BiCon and other noodling

I have booked for BiCon, which should be a laugh, and am also thinking of going to KnowledgeLab III: WHO CARES? in Lancaster from 30 June - 2 July. At one or both of these I am thinking of running a session about "Hacking your brain" or CBT for the mainly sane. (That probably sucks as a title, I have no idea what to call it.)

Does this strike people as a good idea? Would you attend? Will I be inundated with people who are too crazy for me to handle? Should I run some other topic that you'd be desperate to see? Or should I just shut up now?

And on the subject of BiCon: there are a lot of people I would like to catch up with, especially since I haven't been for a couple of years. So I wonder, first, whether they would like to catch up with me, and, secondly, if any of them will be around before or after and might be popping over to Edinburgh...

Well would you?

That old rusty spaceship wants to sail into the milky way again on a river of red red wine

OK, it looks like Sunday 18th for Thutmose III - probably meeting at 2pm, but I'll check tonight if that clashes with a Solstice meeting. And the wheel and German market can be Wednesday 21st at 5ish.

I'd like to hold the mulled beverage do on the 30th - [livejournal.com profile] sulis_minerva were you planning a party then?

Tonight I shall be at a Solstice meeting and then at the Hoose. If anyone wants me to pick up a ticket for the meal and can have the money for me in the pub, comment here before 5.00 or text me... [livejournal.com profile] leila_child - do you definitely want to do the door?

And in other messages, I need the addresses of [livejournal.com profile] ravenevermore and [livejournal.com profile] cujosmurf - mail me if you wish gifts!

So I definitely intend to have a mulled wine party, possibly also featuring hot port and egg nog. Do you want to come?

It looks like I won't be at Vaudeville tonight as everyone I know is dropping out of going, so what *are* people doing tonight, and is there anybody who would like my company? Plans that are not The Auld Hoose get extra points, but frankly I may well turn up there if nothing else turns up, I realise I'm probably alienating myself from a lot of people by disliking that pub.

Stay little valentine, stay

I did much painting this weekend - the hall is now green and gold but a lot of tidying up round the edges needs to be done. Now that I'm doing DIY, though, I realise how much I can't do. Does anyone out there have either the tools or the expertise to help me shave a couple of millimetres off the bottom of my bedroom door, for instance. That one thing would improve my life so much...

And I have decided that I have to go see Elvis Costello at the Usher Hall on Valentine's Day - would that not be very appropriate? Does anyone want to come with me?

A few holiday* related queries

What does one eat with cold meats in a buffet?

Does anyone know what the Auld Hoose is doing on Xmas day? (Or Xmas Eve or Boxing day.)

Do you like Stollen? Or some other kind of Xmas cake/pie/pudding? (No, I am not going to do a poll.) What about chestnuts?

Where in Edinburgh can I get cheap holly and mistletoe? (Please note that I am not prepared to climb over any fences)

What is everyone up to on Hogmanay?

I wanna go play where the geckos play

Well we're out of our office and I'm tucked into the corner of someone else's, using a different machine It's OK because I got iTunes and Safari going so can cope with anything until we're back where we belong. Also the hippie boss bought me lunch, so won't call her useless for a bit...

I'm still planning what to do next week when I'm off. I was thinking of going to the Botanics on Friday lunchtime to see the Earth from the Air exhibition and maybe the Alternative Midsummer Night's Dream which is on at 1.15 and is free. Does anyone want to come with me?

I laugh in the face of danger! Then I hide until it goes away.

In the interests of cheering up, here is the start of a schedule for July and August. It's not at all full at the moment - feel free to suggest things for me to do. Stuff I want to do includes seeing films (Round the World in 80 Days, Hellboy, Harry Potter, any other suggestions?), getting out of Edinburgh with the help of [livejournal.com profile] lilitufire, and going for a couple of nice meals out in places I haven't tried yet.

Update: I have just been past Ripping Records and now I have a list of gigs I'd like to go to. Is anyone else interested in:

Wed 11th August, Half Man Half Biscuit, Liquid Room, £13.00
Wed 1st September, Sonic Youth, Barrowland Glasgow, £15.00
Sat 6th November, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Academy Glasgow, £27.50 - unlikely
Sun 28th November, Shellac, Liquid Room, Edinburgh, £13.50 - almost definite

I'd be interested in a lift for the Glasgow ones, otherwise I may give in to my fear of getting home late and get a room in Glasgow...

Dos dedos mis amigos - everything's cool

I'm feeling a lot better now - it's amazing how much people ticking the ticky box can help, really; that and not being at work, of course.

So now I feel strong enough to make some weekend plans:

Tonight someone is coming to pick up the walker that [livejournal.com profile] lilitufire gave me (sorry but I just couldn't get used to it, but it's going to a good home). And [livejournal.com profile] pavlos is coming round.

Tomorrow I hope to meet [livejournal.com profile] bunnyphone for coffee and then on to the beer festival to meet [livejournal.com profile] mathie, while not getting too legless too early. Maybe I'll get Jon to meet me there later, since I'm kind of supposed to be seeing him, too.

Saturday daytime I'll be at the farmer's market, maybe meeting Kisin for some hot-pig-inna-bun.

Saturday night I'll try to make it to [livejournal.com profile] cairmen's Bizarre Foods of Death, especially if I find anything suitable bizarre at the market.

Sunday it's possible that [livejournal.com profile] cairmen and/or [livejournal.com profile] skx will come round for tea and exchange computers, DVDs etc.

Oh, and I have free tickets for UGC - is there anything on there I should see?

I'm just gonna go home, lie down, and listen to country music. The music of pain

I feel a bit crappy and sorry for myself. Not terrible or anything, but still going meh. I have a number of options for activities this weekend, but don't much feel like any of them. Beer festival would get me unhealthily drunk in a way that I've sworn to not do because I don't like it, Beltaine folk's solstice thing is far away and inaccessible, bizarre foods of death may be too intimidating and/or poisonous. Meh.

Next wednesday I see Suzanne Vega, and will probably follow that with the Fire Society Solstice club, but until then I don't know what to look forward to, somehow.

[Poll #309203]

Or you could suggest something for me to cheer meself up with. Actually I've just thought that I want to go to the farmers market if it's on this week. Does anyone know if it is?

Be a witness to the march of time

Bah! Snow fell briefly and then stopped. Although perhaps given other people's woes with the stuff I shouldn't be risking wishing for it. I still feel shit. Word is being crap on me. And I can't go home for another hour and a half. Unfair!

This weekend I'd like to get some people along to Digital (I know I keep saying this), and go to the gym (I keep saying that as well). I also have a matter of hours to decide whether to join my gym at their January rate of £175. I think I will. I know it's £175 out of my account right now, but it's unprecedentedly cheap for a year's gym - assuming I ever go, of course.

My cut glass wit, refreshing and elegant, would enliven every slightly jaded party

Am trying to decide whether to go to the Holyrood tonight. I know I've been drinking far too often lately, like nearly every night, but I do want to catch up with folk. And going and not drinking is just not an option - in the Filmhouse it might have been (except that I didn't) but not in the Holyrood... Also, I must go to the gym at some point, really.

There's a new sun and it's rising.

Firstly apologies to anyone affected by my incredible binge drinking on Thursday night - although most of you will only have seen the odd incoherent post. I felt shit all day yesterday, if that's any compensation.

Today will be better. The sun shines, I have Plans, and I hope to be at .conception tonight, although that may change. I have also just ordered a new cooker, washing machine and digital radio phone from Comet, because everything in our flat is breaking down at once. Now for the truly interesting challenge of disconnecting the old washing machine in time for the delivery...

I am planning creative enterprises to make use of the extra space while Paul is away. Must try and make sure he doesn't come back to a room full of clothes, paint etc though. Must also go out in the sun while it's there. And tidy up. And stuff.

Went into a brain shop: they said they'd have to rebuild the whole head

Yes folks, this week is Morphine week. Just to make life a little harder for myself, this week I am going to be using Morphine lyrics only in the titles. Next week will be They Might Be Giants week, and then maybe Momus week. During Cop Shoot Cop week I will perform a drive by shooting: during Elvis Costello week I may be forced to slit my wrists.

Meanwhile, back at work. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sibelian and [livejournal.com profile] ciphergoth I got up on time, which in turn meant I could weigh myself, find clothes, eat a little, take my medication, moisturise and still walk to work in time. I sat down and read my mail, then I opened Mozilla. Oh, well, it all went well up to 9.05am, which is a hell of a lot better than last week. I feel bright and alert and resoluted, which is the opposite of dissoluted, but not quite as useful as resolved. I feel capable of doing some work. Now I must actually do some work. Um.

Meanwhile here are some future plans:- )

Right. Now some work.

She's got a smile that swerves all over the road

Piracy is a kind of progressive taxation, which may shave a few percentage points off the sales of well-known artists (and I say "may" because even that point is not proven), in exchange for massive benefits to the far greater number for whom exposure may lead to increased revenues.

According to Tim O'Reilly. And William Gibson seems to agree. Yes Gibson finally has a blog (though the manual typewriter thing hasn't been true for many years. And he's now alongside Samual Pepys in the blogs-I-can't-yet-read-as-LJ-feeds list. As is Neal Gaiman's blog, since the feed is one of the several I've signed up for which don't seem to work :-( I'm now getting Warren Ellis' Die Puny Humans, though - which rocks.

So that'll be enough to keep me busy for a while. Meanwhile, here's some ideas of what I might be doing in the next couple of weeks... wanna join me? )

Well I'm feeling a lot less ill and have managed to go out and brave the Orange shop without any medication stronger than mentholated chewing gum, so I am seriously wondering whether I should go to the Mish. I wanna wear my new giant boots, having given them a few test runs over short distances...
