Piracy is a kind of progressive taxation, which may shave a few percentage points off the sales of well-known artists (and I say "may" because even that point is not proven), in exchange for massive benefits to the far greater number for whom exposure may lead to increased revenues.

According to Tim O'Reilly. And William Gibson seems to agree. Yes Gibson finally has a blog (though the manual typewriter thing hasn't been true for many years. And he's now alongside Samual Pepys in the blogs-I-can't-yet-read-as-LJ-feeds list. As is Neal Gaiman's blog, since the feed is one of the several I've signed up for which don't seem to work :-( I'm now getting Warren Ellis' Die Puny Humans, though - which rocks.

So that'll be enough to keep me busy for a while. Meanwhile, here's some ideas of what I might be doing in the next couple of weeks...

I have very little money right now (surprise) so I'm looking for stuff to do that doesn't cost a lot. Fortunately Buffy is starting next week, so that's Thursday taken care of for a bit. Does anyone want to come round ours to watch it?

I've also found out that our local video shop is half price on Tuesday and Thursday, so I want to get a few things out once a week (at least until we run out of things they stock that we want to watch, which won't take long. Does anyone fancy seeing The Time Machine, Minority Report (which I've seen and would be happy to see again), Scooby Doo (!) or Mulholland Drive?

This Saturday is Ascension in Teviot, which I am definitely going to, with giant boots with spikes on. I may also make it to [livejournal.com profile] sparklegoth's first, though that might involve me in either putting on my boots there or breaking my leg...

Very well-argued article (just what I'd expect from Tim O'Reilly). And definite food for thought for those people like me who get a nervous tic whenever the subject of copying CDs is mentioned. Mind you, as I read it, it's not a manifesto to go out and copy what they hell you like with a clear conscience because everyone else is doing it and no one's dumn enough to pay for CDs these days, which is the sort of argument in favour of piracy that really bothers me.

I agree with this view of software/content copying (And I also agree with RMS's view that "piracy" is a poor name for the practice. Fee-evasion, perhaps).

I think Microsoft is by far the biggest beneficiary. Everyone buys Microsoft products because:

- Their friends have them (usually unpaid copies) and they want to be compatible.
- They can find unpaid copies easily to test, unlike with competing products.

We'd probably be up for that!

Er... is that the start of the seventh series, or is it another one? We've nearly finished watching season six, and should be up-to-date by then...
