What does one eat with cold meats in a buffet?

Does anyone know what the Auld Hoose is doing on Xmas day? (Or Xmas Eve or Boxing day.)

Do you like Stollen? Or some other kind of Xmas cake/pie/pudding? (No, I am not going to do a poll.) What about chestnuts?

Where in Edinburgh can I get cheap holly and mistletoe? (Please note that I am not prepared to climb over any fences)

What is everyone up to on Hogmanay?

I don't mind Stollen, having grown up eating quite a lot of it as mum would come back from Austria weighed down with the stuff. :) Xmas pudding I'm very fond of these days - I don't know what else people have, though.

Chestnuts are great in stuffing but have no place anywhere else.

Was going to say a similar thing, but we're not going to Austria until January, when there'll probably be something of a Stollen famine. I like it, but not in abundance.

Do you like Stollen? Or some other kind of Xmas cake/pie/pudding?

I love Stollen, or indeed anything with marzipan. I like traditional fruit cakes if they have soft rather than hard icing, and mince pies in small quantities (preferably warmed, with cream), and traditional Xmas pudding. I used to make my own versions of most of these, but nowadays I usually buy them - the ready-made ones are much cheaper, and the quality is good enough that I don't think I can necessarily do better.

What about chestnuts?

Nice if someone else roasts them. When I tried, they came out too hard and dry, despite following the instructions to the letter.

I'll be sitting quietly and contentedly in front of the telly with a good supply of whisky, nibbles and fruit cake, I think.

With cold meats? Sliced beef tomatoes, nice bread, savory snacks like pretzels and such like. Although I am Austria inspired in that answer, they are the kings of cold meats.

Stollen good, other xmas cake, hmm, one xmas pud a year is enough, I think! Panettoni (sp?) is nice, but again one is enough. It's a good alternative to the pud for those who don't like it. Chestnuts are great to have with things like chicken and, well, more or less anything this time of year!

Holly/mistletoe, I don't know, sorry.

Hogmanay, I'll be in some club somewhere wishing it was Silvester and I was outside the Cathedral in Vienna.

Buffet: Cold meats, cheeses, crunchy vegetables like carrot batons and peppers, chutneys and pickles, tiny pickled onions, interesting breads, things onna stick.

Crunchy veg - yes! I was trying to think of a way to get vegetables in without doing heavy salads which no one will eat.

I also think I will use Delia's idea of one hot dish of baby baked spuds with cheese.

Damn, I'm really hungry now.

hogmanay- i'm going to the new year mission, possibly after pub. not sure how many other people are going, or even if i'll last until 5am, though.

stollen, etc- urgh. though yule log i like, probably due to chocolate content.

buffet- has been answered better by other people, though i like the idea of crunchy veggie bits :)

Despite my love of both Christmas and sweet things, I don't actually like Xmas cake, Xmas pudding or stollen.

Mince pies and brandy snaps are good though.

And satsumas, my other traditional Christmas food.

For NYE I plan to be at the St R party.

Which weekend is it you're coming down in January?

On the Friday night (21st) there's a Gothic Masque ball in Oxford that a lot of people are going to - us, St R, asrana, duranorak (possibly), conflux, dr_meg etc., and lots of other goths I don't know. The DJs are the B-Movie people.

I've managed to lose the website addres, but it's £12 and there were still tickets left last I heard, so if you fancied it, you should definitely come.

I know of nothing on the Saturday, so you could declare a purplerabbits-themed party if you wanted...

On hogmanay, I might either be hosting a party at my place here in Inverness, but if it looks untenable, then I hope to be in Edinburgh partying (don't know where yet though).
