Well I am back at work and feeling much more functional. I have re-realised that I do have many coping mechanisms for depression, including such slightly unorthodox methods as getting my hair dyed, going to the gym and eating fried strawberries. Fried strawberries are nice, especially on pork, but they do fall apart a bit quickly. Of course taking a couple of days off sick is also a coping mechanism, and one that comes highly recommended...

So, yeah, I did go to the gym, and came to the conclusion that The Commonwealth Pool is if anything slightly worse than Marco's. The gym is smaller and the machines are very close together. It's also got big windows onto the outside world so people can see you going all red in the face, and the music is blaringly loud, so I couldn't listen to the Pod.

The main reason I got pissed off though was that I couldn't have a shower, and I only realised this after doing 75 minutes CV exercise and feeling like I was about to die. They do indeed have showers, but you can only get in them if you're wearing a swimming costume, which I didn't bring since I don't swim. Grr. I will be trying to go to Marco's tonight where nudity isn't seen as inherently obscene. Plus it's cheaper.

Other good stuff I've done while I'm trying to think positively:
  1. Watched Shrek, which is funny and was just about as unchallenging as I needed

  2. Bought new Echo shoes in their sale, which means I can use my other Echo shoes as gym shoes, since they are a million times more comfortable than my tacky bargain store trainers

  3. Went to the library and got many CDs. *FX of iPod burping*

  4. Had the whole of Emmental visit my house at once, which is cool and shows that The Curse is lifting

  5. Visited Jon and listened to his new hi-fi, which rocks like a boat full of guys and dolls standing up, and also has glow-ey valves

  6. did another useful and scary thing which I shall detail more in a filtered post. But it was useful. And scary.

And I really appreciate having a Jon and a Sandy to cuddle when I feel as crap as I did, as well as a Pavlos who does great neck-rubs and skritchings.

I read that as "as long as it's fred"....

Strawberries and black pepper are nice, too - the pepper really brings out the strawberry taste.

Going to the gym is one of my top stress relievers (so long as I can motivate myself to go...). If it's a person who is making me stressed, I do the stairclimbing machine and pretend I am stomping on their head. :) And luckily I live very close to my gym so I don't have to shower on site.

Fried strawberries - do you slice them up and fry them in a little oil, or something else?

Yes, sliced and fried in basil flavoured olive oil. You can also kebab them, apparently, which would be healthier...

valves.... *drool*....

heh, sorry.

Fried strawberries? How odd. Sounds very nice, though. I've never been a huge strawberry fan myself, perhaps frying them and eating them with savoury things would improve my view of them.

No nudity in the showers? That's a bit crap. Mind you, I go to the David Lloyd, which doesn't even have cubicles in the changing rooms and am always amazed by the lengths come people still go to to cover themselves (thus drawing more attention to themselves) whilst changing. (Which reminds me - I haven't been to the gym for over a week - must do something about that...)

Oh and re: hair dye. When I was depressed I changed my hair colour multiple times and spent far more time on things like make-up than normal. I suppose it was mainly so that when I passed a mirror I'd be pleasantly surprised and it kind of cheered me up, rather than going 'urgh'.

Strawberries with a few mashed strawberries mixed with balsamic vinegar and a little sugar is also very yummy :)

Interesting, the little ways one has of cheering oneself up when life gets wearing. I spend money on records, and soft summer fruits are lovely at the moment. Or a nice bottle of wine. I like a splash of orange-juice with strawberries - I guess it's something like the balsamic vinegar - the mild acidity bringing out the strawberryness. I've never tried them fried, though. I've got some strawberries now, but nothing else to go with them. Except toast.

I took you at your word and fried a few strawberries with olive oil and chopped basil this morning, and jolly nice it was too!
