TLTTCAWKI

This Map of where no-one should live in the US has got me thinking about a long standing debating point with me - where to live when I win the lottery so as to assure a bearable old age. So for you Friday conversational topic, as set by Me - where is the world would you not live, and why? And is there, anywhere you'd suggest that is relatively free of/immune to inevitable natural disasters, global warming, oppressive regimes, killer creatures and diseases and violent rednecks?

Listing gently

I have made a list of films I can recall seeing on the big screen like ever in my entire life and it's still at under 70. So help me out, please and make me look less ad. If you can recall seeing a film with me please remind me about it. Any interesting memories you have of me relating to film would also be interesting - at least to me...

More financial advice sought

What sorts of food are really cheap? And are any of them healthy? I'm not a fan of baked beans, though I'd be interested in any way of making them edible, nor cabbage, but I'm trying to be open minded. I can't get to Asda unless I get offered a lift, but Tescos is perfectly possible. Recipes for using cheap ingredients would also be great...

Dear people of the interwebs

www.ukpower.co.uk tells me that I can save up to £133 a year by doing joint gas and electric in an online account. What I would like to know is how hard is the online account bit, and does in work with Firefox (essential)? The top suppliers they recommend are London Energy Online and Seeboard Energy Online, neither of which I'm familiar with. would I be better going for a slightly smaller saving and chosing Scottish GAs, who already supply our gas and who do the boiler insurance (we don't have boiler insurance yet but I'm quite tempted by it.)

In the interests of financial probity

I want to cancel my Barclaycard since I never use it and I want to streamline my finances. But since I last contacted them the barclaycard phoneline has gone all automated and demands a security number which I do not have before it lets you in. Does anyone know how I can contact a human being and cancell my card for ever? I don't owe any money on it so they never write to me, and I tried emailing them from their web pages but didn't get any kind of reply...

Update: Success! Thank you Giles!

I didn't jump. I took a tiny step and there conclusions were

*opens purse, moth flies out*

I am rather sick and tired of having no money, even though I know that a) this is mostly All My Own Fault and b)I am not actually hard up compared to many people I know. I am, however you look at it, not quite living within my income, so I should like to throw the question as wide as I can and ask - what should I or anyone do to live within my income. Obvious ideas are welcome: even though I am usually the one giving this advice to other people, I seem not to be very good at it myself...

Geek help requested

My computer has 256 MB NonECC 333MHz DDR Memory in one unit. It wants more. Which parts of that description do I need to match to get it and where can I get the most memory for it most cheaply?

A challenge

Can you get a result for the Green Party out of who should you vote for? I have been trying for a while, and even cribbing from their document on What are the parties' actual policies I only managed to push my Green score up and my Lib-Dem score even higher. Me suspects a fix-up...

Stompy boots!

They will be going on my for sale pages but since it's Nightmare next week I thought I'd announce I'm selling my Demonia Transformer Boots. They fit a UK size 5 and have all the panels shown in the page I've linked to. They cost £80 so I'd like £55 if possible.

I won't be going to Nightmare, but if anyone wants anything from my Web pages in time for then I'm sure it can be arranged...

Geek advice request

I need a new hard drive because I filled this one with tunes. Is it OK to get one from the Silicon Centre or Maplin or should I order online. How much will I get for my money these days, and is there any difference between different kinds? (see how ignorant I am...)

How large are downloaded TV shows, as a rough guideline? How much space do I actually need? (Apart from all of it.)

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains my sense

Well a cold that's gone to my chest and little sleep last night means I'm definitely not at work today, and probably not tomorrow either. I'll just have to do the interview thingy (if they get round to it - I'll be interested to see if they do...)

Now I'm at home with a headache, trying to do the odd thing around the house, but finding I need to rest every twenty minutes or so. Still, I managed to order the new cooker which [livejournal.com profile] sibelian's dad is kindly getting us as a housewarming pressie - now to work out a> how to get it fitted and b>how to get rid of the old one. Does anyone want a cooker? Or know of anyone other than EFI who'll take donations of gas appliances? (I'm also trying to get rid of a bench, ADSL modem and a ladder - see [livejournal.com profile] edinburgers for details...

Oh well, back to Cable TV before this headache gets any worse :-(

There's a storm outside and the gap between crack and thunder is closing in

The new flat rocks, although naturally I have immediately discovered the mode in which it can be noisy - it whistles and rattles in high winds.

And now I am going to beg for help again. We have to go back to Laputa this weekend and clean for two days solid if we want our deposit back. I understand that not many people want to do other people's cleaning (more's the pity), but we could some help with other stuff, like filling holes we've left in the walls, painting Sandy's old room white, and taking some things away, either for yourself or by walking them to The Forest Cafe up the road. We have got:
  • A working microwave
  • A large blackboard
  • Two pine stools
  • And a bunch of wood from Ivar shelving
That we badly need to get rid of...

Have no worries I do not fret

For the sake of my sanity I have decided not to go to Writers Bloc tonight. I have been so tired and stressed that it just doesn't make sense on a school night - sorry guys.

Meanwhile I am going to measure up at the new flat tonight after work. I have a whole list of stuff I need to check, including:
  • measure every room including where the radiators, doors, window etc go and mark power sockets on that
  • Check what sort of lightbulbs all the fittings take
  • Get the owner to show me the stopcock and the master electric switch and tell me where water tanks etc are
  • Check the actual postal address
  • Ask when bin days are
  • Ask for their address so we can forward mail
  • Check what kind of curtain rails there are and whether there are any hooks
Can anyone think of anything else? This is probably the last time I'll see it before we get the keys on the 5th.

Eddie don't like furniture

Thanks to everyone who was so nice to me when I pathetically begged for it. It does actually make a difference, in spite of my mother's belief that fished for compliment don't count. She's a miserable sod, anyway, and has no place living in my head.

Anyway I feel a lot better. I slept twelve hours after that post and have since got quite a lot done. It's stunning, though, how much intensive work it is getting rid of furniture etc in a sensible way. If I was wicked and lazy I could get Edinburgh Council to take the lot to the dump, but having a slew of emails about every bloody thing and then people failing to turn up etc, is probably more responsible, if tiresome. This is not meant of a criticism of anyone who actually has taken away stuff, by the way, it's not your fault it's just that these things take organising... And Edinburgh Furniture Initiative are almost impossible to get hold of, so I think the tumble drier will end up getting dumped anyway.

And if anyone out there uses Ivar shelving from Ikea, we will probably have some spare bits and bobs, but not enough to make a whole unit. (Polite) suggestions on how to get rid of it would be welcome. It's their most popular and flexible sort of shelving, and the extra parts to make it a whole unit would be very cheap, so it seems a shame to waste it...

Things! Many of them free!

Also posted to [livejournal.com profile] edinburgers. Time is passing and I still need to get rid of stuff, some of it quite large. If you've expressed an interest in any of this before I'd be grateful if you'd let me know what you've decided. If you think something is too expensive, because you need to pay to move it or whatever, please make me an offer. I am seriously prepared to let most things go for nothing as long as they go.

Tumble drier (Creda Allander, same size as a washing machine, front venting)
Stool (the right height for a paino, painted gold)
Four dining chairs with passing, two brown and two black
A nearly new Ikea double loft bed which my flatmate was asking £150 for (they cost £250 new) but would now probably accept any offer you care to throw at him
A solid wood dining table, stained red, which is 90cm x 90cm when closed and 90cm x 150cm with the leaves extended
A rather nice solid dark wood 50s wardrobe, with a rail and a set of shelves and brass handles and scrollwork and stuff
A colour portable TV with remote and portable ariel - £30 or make me an offer
A 15" CRT computer monitor - £15 or make me an offer
A fan heater
An Ikea wardrobe, 1m wide, with wheels and a rail and shoe shelf inside. Has wire netting doors. Still in use but can be free up when needed.
A two drawer chest of drawers (nice old fashioned stripped and stained wood). Still in use but can be free up when needed.

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage

I am feeling a lot better today and have done a few of my Things To Do - including updating and uploading my for sale page. Have a look and let me know if there's anything you want - I really need to clear some of this stuff out before I move. And feel free to make an offer if you can't afford stuff or think it's too expensive - I'm very flexible...

Other things that I have available for free or beer include:

A fan heater
An ioniser
A 1400W hairdryer
A folding keyboard and charger for a V series Palm
A set of powered computer speakers

And a box of spare computer bits that I must look at Real Soon Now...

I've been clearing out some papers and just found the Nominet certificate for bicon.org.uk, which appears to have expired on 7 September. It's in [livejournal.com profile] mistdog's name - do I need to keep it/do anything with it?

I also have a small pile of books, BiCon2002 programmes etc for a potential bi archive. If anyone wants them I need to get rid of them before I move at the end of October - who should they go to?

If anyone wants to copy this to the Bicon community, please do. I'm not a member anymore.

As I walk, I think about a new way to walk

Because I am moving flat I have to think of a whole lot of things. the most important, naturally, is Internet access. Currently I use ADSL through Andrews & Arnold, who are very good. However the new flat can get Telewest, and for the same price I get Broadband and my BT line now, I could get broadband, phone and TV (the broadband will be 750k instead of IMb, but I think that's OK, I don't download movies)

So. Telewest allegedly provide 30Mb of personal web space and 5 "blueyonder personalised email accounts", but I don't know how to transfer by existing domain name and web pages to this, if it can be done. Also does anyone know if Telewest can cope with more than one domain name, as Sandy wants one for his business. the flyingisland name has about eight months to run, and I'm sure A&A will cooperate, but I want to do this right.

Secondly, I want to connect two computers to the internet - do I need a server[1]? I have a router and a lot of ethernet cable, but no spare machine (or at least not one I'm prepared to leave on all the time. Both our machines will be running XP (with ZoneAlarm etc etc) if that makes a difference.

Any advice/offers of help?

[1] Clarification: I don't want either of us to have to leave the machine in our room on all the time. With ADSL the modem/router dealt with this, but I don't think you can get a cable modem that does. Can you? Or could I buy a Wireless solution?
