While I am trying to sort out Everything Ever in my life I am researching my bills and how to reduce them. Therefore am thinking of going on to Virgin for my mobile and taking up their "4 for £40" offer which gives me basically The TV, broadband and landline I am already paying £40.50 for, plus a mobile, which would save me the £26 I pay Orange every month. However I want to keep my number and would have to (presumably) get the Treo unlocked so it works with the new Virgin SIM. Does anyone out there know how to do this?

With Virgin I have a choice of phones:
  • Samsung E250
  • Samsung J600
  • Nokia 5200
  • Sony Ericsson K510i

Is it worth getting any of them? Or should I go for the phoneless offer and carry on using my Treo? The Treo is playing up a bit and I mostly have to use the hands-free now. The phoneless package gives you 300 minutes and 300 texts a month which is more than I'll ever use, whereas the one with a phone gives 100 of each, which is also more than I currently use...

If you're going to go for that deal with the mobile, personally I would take the Nokia on the basis that they're easier to unlock if you want to change SIM any time in the future. Unlocking your current phone would probably cost you money, unless you know someone with a cable to do it or the unlock codes.

If you do decide to go for the Nokia in the end, let me know if you need it unlocked cos I will be able to get a special code to type it for free for you, instead of it costing £10 or something.

I'm not really that well up with TV packages etc, but I know that I'm going to go with Talk Talk for phone line and internet when I finally get my flat, cos they do a combined thingy for £20.50 a month.

Hope you get it worked out soon. I find all this crap really confusing!

You should be able to keep the phone number, AIUI.

How much do you use a mobile and what, apart from being able to make calls, do you want from one?

At the moment I use the Treo for listening to MP3s, the calculator and texting folk, mostly. I use about 40 minutes of call time a month and 25-40 texts. If the camera was better I'd use it more, too, as it is it's only any good in the summer...

Your phone number is tied to a SIM card, not to your phone. But you SHOULD be able to take your number with you (ask Virgin).

Ive used the K510i.. its a solid, reliable phone.

Only bit I have any info about is that earlier this year I switched from Orange to T-Mobile and took my number with me. What you have to do is phone up Orange and tell them that you want to leave, that you're giving your 30 days notice. They will try to convince you not to, ignore them :-) Eventually I had to say "it's no good, I've already signed the new contract" before she'd stop. Anyway, once she's stopped, she should be able to give you a PAC code. I think it takes a few hours (a day maybe?) to kick in, but once it does you can go to Virgin and say that you want to join and you want to transfer your mobile number and this is your PAC code, and they should be able to do that for you for free. Or at least, T-Mobile did for me.

Can't comment about phones, but if the Treo's starting to play up and if you can get one of those other phones for free, I suggest getting one in case the Treo dies completely. Once you've got your current mobile number linked to the new SIM card, you could unlock the Treo and put the new SIM card in to use it instead of the free phone, if you wanted...

    Glad to be of help!

Just don't do what I did - I joined T-Mobile and cancelled with Orange at the same time, which meant that I spent 1 month paying line rental for both services. If I'd thought about it at all, I would've realised that giving one month's notice means that ideally you'd e.g. give notice with one and then 3 weeks later join up with the other. I suppose for this to work well you'd also make sure the deal you want to switch to will still be around in 30 days' time...
