Inadvertent meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] drdoug

Beliefs which I once held which I now think are wrong.
  • That astrology can provide useful information about personality if you do it properly
  • That my occasional profound feelings of awe and wonder were direct perceptions of god
  • That it is possible to be psychic and that maybe I was
  • That I would only ever sleep with two or three people
  • That I would get old with a boyfriend and be a happy liberal old couple with maybe a camper van (actually there were several boyfriends I believed that about, now I don't think there'll be any.)
  • That trying to lose weight would be too damaging to my mental health
  • That I didn't eat any more than my slimmer friends
  • That I wasn't the Livejournal type

Interestingly I don't think any of my political beliefs have changed very dramatically, although they may have become more extreme in principle and more forgiving in practice, which I think is appropriate.
Mood:: 'amused' amused
Music:: A Hovering Sombrero earworm. Aarrgh!

After the bit of a revolution in my head about feminism and homosexuality in my very late teens, the same's broadly true of me. Although I'm finding myself becoming increasingly pragmatic, prepared to compromise, and willing to press for incremental improvement rather than revolution. Anyone would think I was getting older or something!

What do we want? Radical Change!
When do we want it? Phased in gradually over the next five years!

Heh - I've actually chanted something along these lines on a demo.

It was in the very early 90s, when we were campaigning against student loans. The chant of the demo was mostly "What do we want? Grants not loans! When do we want them? Now!". But me and a few mates felt this didn't quite sum up our own demands accurately, so we chanted something like, "What do we want? A flexible but equitable system of student support that does not filter admission to higher education on ability to pay! When do we want it? As soon as the appropriate administrative systems can be implemented!"

Sadly it didn't catch on the same way ... Actually, this is a good example of getting more extreme over time - I'm now convinced that the simple "grants not loans" is basically sound, which I wasn't at the time.

I think it was on the same demo that we got in to trouble from a couple of po-faced Stalinists for "trivialising the issues". I think our sin was to have a good time doing a conga while singing, "We won't pay our loans back, and we won't pay our poll tax! Da da da daaa, da da da daaa!"

"We won't pay our loans back, and we won't pay our poll tax! Da da da daaa, da da da daaa!"

I think that's fantastic, and entirely in the spirit of student demonstrations.

Anti-war march last year (the one that was the week after the rich people protested about not being able to chase indigenous species for miles across the countryside as an alleged alternative to actually looking after their livestock properly) featured a gang of people with drums and tambourines cheerfully singing: "Stick the Countryside Alliance up your arse" to the tune of "She'll be coming round the mountain">. Marvellous!

Excellent! Missed that one.

Mind you, I'm not sure it's a practical suggestion. There's an alarmingly large number of people in the Countryside Alliance. You'd need gallons of lube.

I believe it was the Government who were being induced to do so.

Oh, I've just got a wonderful vision of Tony Blair with that pained, slightly disappointed look he does, with the slightly-pursed lips ...
