Does anyone fancy living next door to me? Our neighbours have moved out and the flat which shares a hallway with us is empty. It's a first floor on Cockburn Street in a lovely stair and is going unfurnished for £900 per month and is available 21st July. It's got 3 double bedrooms a living room and a breakfast kitchen and the agents are saying it's a professional let (so no students). It's a lovely flat and has the added advantage of living next door to me and [livejournal.com profile] sibelian - think of the joint parties we could hold!

Oh and there's a lift which I think works and the flat has a wee ramp into it, so it could be wheelchair accessible, though I don't think it's adapted inside.

Follow up if you want more details...

Sounds good! I'd be interested in more details. However, being able to take a flat would be dependant on:

(a) Me getting another job almost as soon as my doctors signs me as being fit for work again, and

(b) Paul getting a job up here pretty quickly.

(b) is currently much more likely than (a) as he's at least had interviews recently and is waiting to hear from the agencies how he got on. Having said that when we take into consideration that we would be paying one rent rather than two, one council tax rather than two, one internet connection rather than two, etc. then even £900 starts to look cheap, especially given it's location. And of course having nice charming people as neighbours is icing on the cake.

Sadly you'd be unlikely to get through the agent's credit checks unless you have a job already- they ask for a bank reference to say that you can afford the amount of the rent.

I don't see that as being a problem. Paul having a new job in Edinburgh would involve him leaving a job in Manchester, and as he is currently on the management payscale of a newspaper, and will not be taking a cut in salary, the bank ref should be a doddle, particularly as the combined rent for two one bed properties is currently over £800, with everything else (electric, gas, council tax) doubled, and we are paying that with no problems. Most agents are actually considerate of people who are relocating (as Paul would be), and we have always worked on the assumption that there would be a point when he would finance me through a degree seeing as I left my degree course to help support him through his post-grad stuff.
