I'm looking for some knitting patterns, preferably free, although I'm prepared to buy a decent book if it's got more than a few things I want to do in it.

In particular I'm looking for those fingerless gloves with little fold over mitten tops. Plus any good hats. Scarves I have plenty of, but a book of accessories might be the way to go...

Any ideas? I find four needle knitting doable but sometimes more trouble than it's worth since I don't mind gloves with a seam, and I've never successfully knitted on a circular needle cos they always seem to be the wrong length...

You'll be wanting a pair of Broadstreets (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/PATTbroadstreet.html) then. in fact if you don't already peruse Knitty (http://www.knitty.com) and have a Ravelry Account (https://www.ravelry.com/) then you might be missing out on some good stuff :)

Also we haven't actually managed to meet, despite having several common interests. I think I might have recognised you in The Forest while I was working in the kitchen at one point but I dunno. Edinburgh has several knitting groups. In fact I'm currently helping to run a knitting, crochet and other handicraft group at the LGBT centre on Monday evenings from 6:30/7pm.

There is also the longest running knitting group in Edinburgh, Stitch and Bitch on a Wednesday night from 7:30pm at Chai on Merchants Row, just off Candlemaker Row, opposite Oz Bar and in a basement. It's a lovely friendly group and lots of us are happy to show or teach new or different techniques.

I'd really like to meet you. I might be able to help with the circular knitting problem, using double pointed needles, circulars or the wonderful technique known as Magic Loop (http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/mloop.html). There are also videos on Knitting Help (http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques) on the different ways to use circulars for knitting different sized circumferences.

I hope some of that helps and if you fancy coming along to knitting and want to know a randomly (LJ) familiar face, my mail addy is cherade9 @ hotmail.co.uk.

That all sounds great. I ought to be able to make it to a knitting night next week, actually, nopw that things aren't as mad at work.

Is there any way to get a Ravelry account other than to sit back and wait?

For flip top mittens you may be interested in this pattern
http://www.knittingdaily.com/freepatterns/gloves_mittens/Flip_Top_Mittens89-1.html

I can e-mail it to you if you don't want to sign up yourself.
My other favourite places for finding patterns are:
http://www.modadea.com/index.htm
http://www.garnstudio.com/
http://www.berroco.com/pattern_library.html

Happy hunting :)

The flip-top knitting pattern would be good if you could send it - it looks easier to make in a smaller size that the knitty one. The other links are great, thanks!
