I don't suppose anyone has a spare SD card reader or cards they want to throw at me, do they?

if not can anyone tell me why I shouldn't buy this 1 GB card that comes free with a reader? Has anyone heard of picstop before?

It seems reasonable, provided you are going to be using it with MS Windows.

I would be astonished if it didn't just work when you plug it in to Mac Os, all other USB devices do...

Also: SD cards are standard. They'll work with OS/X or Linux too.

However, you might want to check eBay for prices. I just bought an 8Gb SDHC card (next-gen SD, probably won't work with your camera unless it's < 6 months old) for £35 including shipping.

My camera is brand new, but I can't imagine ever wanting 8Gb on it! Actually it's the reader I need as much as anything.

If it is a new camera you're probably safe, but do check the "max size" restrictions.

Meg bought a 1Gb flash-card for her camera prior to going to Florida, only to discover her modern-ish camera would only accept cards <=512Mb.

I bought a sort of USB stick that you fit an SD card into, which then plugs into a USB port like any other USB stick. So I don't have a separate card reader as such.
