I want a measuring wheel so I can measure how far I've walked (on the map, I don't want a big fuck off one I have to carry everywhere). The thing is that I can only find digital map wheels for over £20 which seems a bit excessive for the occasional egoboo, plus I can actually do the sums by myself, cos I am so clever. So where can I get a small wheel of known diameter, on a stick? Go on, you've a creative lot - think of something...

And yes, my first thought *was* a pin wheel or pastry cutter, but I don't want to make holes in my map...

charity shops, the occasionally come in and we had them as new goods last year. Grays of george st, they have everything in a bizzare hardwareish way.

An old cassette recorder is likely to have a flywheel of appropriate size. You could also use lego or mechano.

Theres a useful running map thingy I used to use that will trace your walk/run and tell you how far it was. Would that be of any use? Sure I could scare up the url if you wnat.

Have you considered a pedometer instead? (Doesn't give you the linear distance you've walked, gives you the number of steps you've taken instead. Which, when multiplied by your average stride -- which you can get by doing a measured kilometer to average it out -- tells you the distance. The advantage being that they also give you a feel for how far you've gone on days when you're not going terribly far in a straight line but still seem to be moving around a lot.)

What you really need is a GPSr, so you can track your exact path and trip distance.

if its on the map, i would always lay out a piece of string on the route i wanted, then straighten it out and measure against a ruler, then multiply depending on scale of the map. in real life you can match your route to the map by landmarks and you'll always know how far it was
