How do pop-under advertisers passion.com know that I am in Edinburgh? Is there any way I can stop them knowing this ( am using Firefox but don't seem to be able to install stuff...)

You're on blueyonder.

Often its addresses are *.edi-???.blueyonder.co.uk

Often IP addresses are based in a locale, and are therefore easily traceable.

Strong suggestion: go look into installing tor (http://tor.eff.org/) on your PC. It not only includes the very effective Privoxy ad-blocking web proxy (sort of like a net nanny tool that you control and that's designed to block ads, not content), it also includes an internet anonymizer tool designed to make you hard to track. (And it's backed by the EFF.)

Probably based on your IP address.

go to http://www.showipaddress.com/whoisip.html and click the "WHOIS>>" submit button

We're with freeserve/wannadoo, and keep getting pop-unders assuming we're Leeds-based (which was once the case, but is purely coincidental).

[in other news, [livejournal.com profile] atropinesulfate was round, and we have tabards!!]
