I'm thinking of spending at least one week of my annual leave at home but treating it as a holiday, probably in July, so can anyone recommend day trips from Edinburgh that are accessible by bus or train (unless you're prepared to offer me a lift)? I believe there's a wee ferry that goes to an island in the Forth, for instance. So far I'm thinking of things like Crammond village, Falkirk Wheel (by train) and Rosslyn Chapel. Directions to any of those or other ideas would be great...

Train to South Queensferry, little walk downhill to Hawes Pier and take the Maid of the Forth out to Inchcolme for a couple of hours of fresh air and good eclesiastic and (20th wartime ruins to clamber around, or a beach to sit on and gaze out to sea in the company of some friendly seals and their pups who have just got to the fluffy stage.

Aberdour castle (just across the firth)is a very pretty little castle. Slapbangnext to the railway station as well. Has very fine tearoom, good gardens and lovely views across the water.

Dirleton Castle and Seton Chapel are on a direct bus route from Haymarket and St Andrews Sq.
Linlithgow and Stirling Castles are accessible by train.

Tantallon Castle (http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/properties_sites_detail.htm?propertyID=PL_284)? (doesn't help much with transport info but Googling suggests there is a bus going past it)

Linlithgow boat wheel. I'm not sure exactly how to get there, but I think it's a short bus ride from the station.
