All good people read good books now your conscience is clear

Book meme, so I can use my reading rabbit icon - hurrah!

1)Total number of books owned:
I think it's about 900 that are mine and not Sandy's. Am torn between going up to the full thousand and culling some so I can move...

2)The last book I bought:
I bought a pile from Barnardo's all at once: The Seventh Raven by Peter Dickinson, The Dramaturges of Yan by John Brunner, Petrified by Barbara Nadel (not good), and The Moving Finger by Agatha Christie.

3) The last book I read: The Moving Finger

4) Five books that mean a lot to me:
  • The Dispossessed by Ursula leGuin because it almost totally sums up my political position
  • The Blue Hawk by Peter Dickinson because it's weird and beautiful and says something about people's relationship with gods
  • The Stone That Never Came Down by John Brunner, because it's optimistic and I'd love to believe it
  • Fourth Mansions by R A Lafferty because it's insane and inspired
  • Peter's Room by Antonia Forest because it comes from my childhood and talks about how imaginary worlds can drive you a bit mad

Once you get to a thousand, you begin to think 'Why not two thou..."

You end up with a loft full, especially if you think hardbacks are nicer (and often cheaper) than paperbacks.

I like The Moving Finger. I am firmly of the opniion that Agatha Christie is actually an extremely good writer.

I dont know about extremely good but she is certainly very skilful. A little too formulaic to make *extremely* good though IMHO.

You may be right - I read lots of her books when I was quite young so I find it difficult to be objective, because I loved them so much. Now when I read them all the characters seem very real because of that early conditioning. Other people seem to find her characters less convincing, so this may be just me.

That is an excellent icon :)

I think I shall propogate this meme, since I've finally admitted that I am trying for my height in books this year.
