I've started knitting again, which I blame entirely on [livejournal.com profile] hfnuala, and this time I actually did a test piece for the first time in my life. This is probably wise given that the pattern comes from an 80s book from a charity shop and doesn't go up to my size and in any case the wool doesn't match it even a bit. It will be a black and purple entrelac sweater and I'm into the pattern now. It took a while to get yarn I liked but I braved a very odd shop called Daintyland in Sciennes, where everything is served from behind the high wooden counter by a little old lady of great enthusiasm who takes hours to find everything in her enormous stock of yarns. I'm going to have to go back for more purple, because I have no idea how to tell how I'm going to need, and the purple is discontinued. You can never have too much purple - right?

Anyway I had a very pleasant evening last night with knitting and Jamie, who came to pick up books and ending up chatting for three hours about sex and politics and sex politics, which has to be good.

Rar! Did the sweater design book help?

Sounds like a shop I should check out. I was in the yarn department of Jenner's today but only got buttons.

hi, i'm reading my friend's friends and i do lots of knitting (but i can't spell, sorry). Do you know the yardage (length of yarn per ball, it doesn't have to be in yards that's just the word for it) of the like pattern sepcified yarn and the yarn you are using?Becos then you could work you how much purple to get. If you don't then after you've used one ball (well 2 balls, one of each colour becos it's entrelac) you could measure the area you've knited and compair that to the total area you want to make to get an idea of how many balls you'll need.
But obviuosly you can't acatully have too much purple.
