Flying Birds. Excellent Birds. Watch them fly. There they go.

I caught the train to Linlothgow yesterday and walked round the loch. It was loverly sun and a hell of a lot of birds including two new ducks - scaup and pochard plus a few great crested grebes, not doing a lot yet, and goldeneye displaying.

Full list

blue tit, great tit
chaffinch, green finch
robins (numerous - singing their lungs out), blackbird
crow, jackdaw, rook and magpie
feral pigeon and wood pigeon
kestrel (seen hovering from the train) and buzzards circling
pied wagtail
wren
dunnock
many noisy house sparrows
common, herring, black-headed and lesser-black-backed gull (just one of that last)
mute swan
greylag and white geese
mallard, including some crosses
tufted duck, pochard, goldeneye, scaup
coot, moorhen
great crested grebe
cormorants, many, on Cormorant island and on the other crannog island that is not called cormorant island
probably a distant heron

I also saw bunnies at the loch and a fox from the train, which was a bonus.

Aye, that's a good walk. Congratulations on spotting all those birds. When we were out yesterday, we only saw a few ducks, coots and swans - though that's possibly because they're about the only birds I can recognise.

There's a very obliging kestrel adjacent to Craigmillar Castle which likes to show off (or else is a very deficient hunter and spends all its time swooping about).

no i am not being stalker-y. I was just curious if this was a current lj or not (the last item I comment on was a google search result for thing that link to www.perkigoth.com)

I just took up bird watching myself. It's really entertaining. Hummingbirds standing ground and defending his territory. Mockingbirds perching and being hella' noisy. Crows keeping lookout while he friends feed. It's better than TV.
