And here is a list. Or several lists. Categorised for your convenience.

Birds I saw on Arran that were new on my (mid)life list:

Barn owl - asleep in a cave
Black guillimot - which I had to look up in the book when I got back, which is always satisfying
Buzzard - both circling and sitting on a telegraph pole being an obvious buzzard
Curlew - on the beach right by the cottage
Fulmer - on the cliffs in walking distance of the cottage
Gannet - diving in an impressive way, as they do
Greater black backed gull - big fuckers, ain't they?
Linnet - on a golf course in the rain
Pheasant - which I'd seen before in my life, but not in this list
Raven - also damn big
Red breasted merganser - which I had no idea what it was before I looked it up
Ringed plover - pretty little beach bird, can't be seen until it moves...
Rock pipit - easier to see than meadow pippits, which I didn't
Sandpiper - could conceivably have been a dunlin, but the RSPB woman said sandpiper
Sandwich tern - at Blackwaterfoot, pretty but dense looking
Shag - which is not a cormorant
Siskin - on the neighbours' bird feeder

And the domestic chicken

Plus some hen harriers in a camera run by the RSPB

My list now stands at 72 species. So there.

Birds I have seen on Arran that I'd seen before: Blackbird, blue tit, chaffinch, chiff chaff, coal tit, common gull, cormorant, dunnock, eider duck, goldfinch, great tit, greenfinch, grey heron, grey wagtail, greylag goose (domestic), herring gull, hooded crow, house martin, house sparrow, jackdaw, kestrel, lesser black-backed gull, mallard, mute swan, oystercatcher, pied wagtail, robin, rock dover (feral pigeon), song thrush, starling, swallow, wood pigeon, wren.

Animoos:
Red deer - lots, including four going up the hill right behind the cottage and a bunch on the golf course in Lochranza
Common seal - one patrolling the bay outside the house. Two having a big stramash in the beach right outside the house and one doing a bananana impersonation onna rock between Blackwaterfoot and The King's Cave.
Red squirrel - on the bird feeder on next door's back green. So cute!
Rabbit - rabbits rabbits rabbits
Hare - big and lollopy with black ears, just like a hare, in fact

Thing I hadn't seen before included, a common gull's nest on the beach, and then a few days later tiny chicks looking like fluffy spotted pebbles on legs, fulmer's nesting in the cliffs, swallows feeding their chicks as they nearly bust out of the nest and young osystercatchers being peeped at REALLY LOUD to hurry up...

I wish to buy a digital camera with a lot of optical zoom for photies of birds and other things. I do not want to spend more than £150. I was thinking of this one Fuji FinePix S5700 Digital Camera (7.0MP, 10x Optical) 2.5" LCD purely cos I saw in reduced in Jessops and Amazon have it even cheaper (which is not to say cheap). Does anyone have any others to recommend/warn against or notes of things I should think about?
