Candy this and candy that whenever I'm out walking

Bored on Friday? Wanna help me think of some playlists?

Today I'm looking for:-

Songs with the word Candy in the title
Songs that are covers but which people assume are the original because the original is so obscure. Beaver Patrol is a classic example.
Cover versions of Kick Out The Jams, I know loads of people have covered it, but who?

(For extra points MP3s of tracks I haven't got would be very welcome, but strictly optional. I would do quite a lot for an MP3 of the original Beaver Patrol...)

Um, the only one I can think of offhand is "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow

Covers - Tainted Love - maybe everyone knows this but the Marc Almond version is a cover, the original is Gloria Jones (I think she later drove Marc Bolan into the Tree of Destiny)

Candy - I Want Candy, Candy Says, Candy Girl, by, er, Bow wow wow, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop?

Candy (Morphine), Psychocandy/Some candy talking (Jesus and Marychain), What's so great about candy? (Pop will eat itself).

All Along The Watchtower's originally a Dylan song, of course, and I believe Marley didn't actually write No Woman No Cry so that may also be one.

Kick out the Jams . . . Rollins Band have done it, I believe . . .

Hmmm : http://www.coversproject.com/artist/MC5

Songs with the word Candy in the title

'Some Candy Talking', JAMC, obviously.
'I Want Candy', Bow Wow Wow, obviously.
'Candy Girl', New Edition, painfully.
Apparently Mandy Moore and Kelis, among others have both done songs called 'Candy'.
Oh, and 'Sex And Candy' by Marcy Playground, of course.
And I think Counting Crows have one called 'Hard Candy'...

As for covers, the things I never knew were covers are 'Tainted Love', 'No Regrets' by Midge Ure, 'Oh L'Amour' by Erasure...can't think of any more just now, though.

I'm not actually familiar with Marcy Playground - should I be?

And yes, No Regrets was the other obvious one I was trying to remember - thanks.

I always think of All Along The Watchtower as Dylan, but I may be unusual in this. I shall be bookmarking that covers site...

"Candy's Room" by Springsteen; maybe not your kind of thing, though?

I learned yesterday that "Season's in the Sun" was not originally by Terry Jacks, but has been done by loads of people, including the Beach Boys.

Who originally did "Beaver Patrol"?

[identity profile] purplerabbits.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know Seasons in the Sun was a Jacques Brel song, though I don't know if translations count as covers? Beaver Patrol was originally by garage punk band The Wilde Knights in 1965. Oddly enough it didn't get much airplay...

Also Husker Du - Candy Apple Grey. Don't know if it counts since it's an album rather than a song. Which I know about entirely because I Googled for it, because of...

The PWEI song is called "Candydiosis". I think it's relevant enough in this thread to quote the entire lyrics.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Candydiosis

Candy says, candy girls, candy apple grey
Psychocandy, candy man eats candy every day
Candy this and candy that whenever I'm out walking
I wish I could go through the day without some candy talking

What's so fucking good, what's so fucking good about candy?
(Psychocandy, candy girl, candy man, candy talking)

(repeat to fade)

This morning's Metro talked about someone refusing to release his cover of the Clash's [sic] classic I Fought The Law... tuff luck Bobby Fuller Four.

Doesn't I Want Candy fall into both categories? I think Bow Wow Wow's was a cover of some 60s girl group original. *googles* Yes, the Strangeloves. Good name for a girl group that...

Candy Everybody Wants, 10000 Maniacs?
Brain Candy, Adam Ant?
So Like Candy, Elvis Costello?
Candy Man, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes? (Don't laugh, I've got the 45).

That's great! I have to hear it. What album's it on?

[identity profile] purplerabbits.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have the original of I want Candy but The Strangeloves were guys, and the lyrics talk about a girl. I haven't got the Bow Wow Wow version, to my surprise...

Follow up to self

[identity profile] the-maenad.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, hang me, I Fought The Law was apparently by the Crickets even before Bobby Fuller did it: http://www.coversproject.com/artist/Crickets

The site knoweth not the versions by the Dead Kennedys or Attila the Stockbroker, though.

"Now For A Feast"

[identity profile] devilgate.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
All this made wan't to hear 'Lisa Says'; which is good because at first I thought it was 'Candy Says', then 'Stephanie Says', so I've just listened to all three.

(I knew I wanted to hear "$GIRL says on a night like this/It'd be so nice if you'd give me a kiss', but I was confused about who $GIRL was. Fortunately I have them all here.)

In which case I submit that it's an even better name for a boy band than a girl one...

[identity profile] ajva.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Would Kandy Pop by Bis count?

[identity profile] duranorak.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I knew there was something I was missing!
God, that band were fantastic for a while. Thank you for reminding me of them. :)

Curve's album "Come Clean" has a track called "Cotton Candy".

Marillion have a track "Three boats down from the candy".

Interesting covers? I can't think of many but the Nine Inch Nails track "Get Down Make Love" is a Queen cover, right?

Songs where I don't think the original's that obscure, but I've encountered people who didn't know about it:

Captain Sensible - Happy Talk
The Pet Shop Boys - Always on my Mind (and Where the Streets Have No Name, but that's just silly)
Kirsty MacColl - A New England
Doctor and the Medics - Spirit in the Sky

[identity profile] metallic-ah.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ween - Candi (does that count?)
Madonna - Candy Perfume Girl
Army Of Lovers - Candyman Messiah

Nine Inch Nails did a song called "Dead Souls" which was originally Joy Division, but you probably knew that...

[identity profile] beingjdc.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Donovan did Candy Man too... also I'm thinking in the latter category Black Box Recorder's 'Lord Lucan is Missing' is not an original, though it's probably almost as obscure.

I have a brass band cover of "what time is love" if it helps :)

[identity profile] mathie.livejournal.com 2004-02-27 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, from what I've re-imported of my iTunes collection so far:

Candy Everybody Wants - 10,000 Maniacs
Candy - Ash
Candygirl - Babybird
Candy's Room - Bruce Springsteen
So Like Candy - Elvis Costello
Candy - Jackson Browne
Candy Man - Roy Orbison

I suppose it doesn't count since it's a traditional song anyway, but < href="http://www.mathie.demon.co.uk/tr/">Tim Rose claimed ownership of the arrangement of 'Hey Joe' that Hendrix turned into a hit (and bitched incessantly about not getting a penny of royalties for it when I met him).
